Manchester City’s Alex Greenwood says that the fact that this weekend’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup final has sold out is another positive step forward for the game.

The competition has historically struggled to attract crowds but the previous attendance record for a final of 6,743 could be smashed when Chelsea face Manchester City in this season’s final at AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday.

Commenting on the news in a Manchester City press conference, defender Greenwood said that selling out the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final for the first time is a big deal.

“The news that it has sold out is massive, it’s brilliant news,” Greenwood said. “We are moving forward every year in the right direction and it speaks for itself that we have got a sell-out crowd.

“It’s a sell-out crowd in a stadium that is a long way from Manchester so that’s fantastic. Year-on-year, we have to keep attracting big crowds in bigger stadiums.”

Just five-and-a-half miles separates Chelsea’s Kingsmeadow home and AFC Wimbledon’s Cherry Red Records Stadium. Despite the FA Women’s Continental League Cup final being on Chelsea’s doorstep, Greenwood is anticipating that the travelling Manchester City fans will make lots of noise.

She said “Our fans are great anyway so I expect nothing less (than vocal support). It’s round the corner for Chelsea but knowing our fans, there will be a large number travelling down and we will have our family and friends there too so it’ll be as loud as always. I’m sure it’ll level out on the day in terms of fans.

“For us, it is just great to have a sold out crowd and a great atmosphere to play in-front of.”

The 2021/2022 FA Women’s Continental League Cup final kicks-off at 5.15pm on Saturday evening.
