London City Lionesses head coach Melissa Phillips has issued a reminder that this weekend’s opponents Liverpool are beatable.

The pair meet at Princes Park on Sunday. Liverpool haven’t lost since opening day, however, that defeat came at the hands of London City Lionesses at Prenton Park.

Liverpool have now gone 14 league games without a defeat while they have stacked up seven consecutive league wins. Ahead of this weekend’s fixture, London City Lionesses boss Phillips reminded us that the club have the necessary tools required to defeat The Reds.

“If anybody knows that Liverpool are beatable in the league it’s us,” Phillips told FAWSL Full-Time. “It’s a game that is always going to be a big game regardless of where each side is sitting in the table.

“We played very well against them at the start of the season and we were very much a new team at that point, still growing together, and we went up there and put in a very professional performance, a very mature performance. We will look to do the same this weekend.

“Both sides have changed, grown and improved significantly since the start of the season. It has been a long time since we last played them and we know how dangerous they are and that they have kept a lot of clean sheets. It will be another test for us.”

London City Lionesses go into the match 10 points adrift of Liverpool who currently occupy top spot in the FA Women’s Championship. Phillips went on to say that to win titles, it is all about consistent building and growth.

She said “It is always going to be fine margins and the tipping point is always going to be the hardest. It is not easy to do what we have done in the past year in recruitment and in the culture and organisation of the club with how ambitious we are. It is always going to be extremely difficult to get to that top spot.

“I think the tipping point is maintaining that consistent growth that we have had. We have a very young team and they have a bright future but there is certainly a lot to play for in this current Women’s Championship season so that’s where our focus will remain.”

The FA Women’s Championship fixture between London City Lionesses and Liverpool kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday.
