Alessia Russo says that Manchester United have the best fans in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and she is excited to play in-front of a large crowd at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils face Everton at ‘The Theatre of Dreams’ in their latest Barclays FA Women’s Super League match and a crowd of close to 30,000 could be present. The fixture is just the second Manchester United Women’s game to be played at Old Trafford following the team’s maiden appearance at the stadium for the game against West Ham United last season.
Manchester United defeated The Hammers 2-0 in that game which was played behind-closed-doors due to COVID-19 restrictions. Forward Russo did not play in that game due to a lengthy injury problem.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in a Manchester United media event, Russo admitted that it is exciting to finally get her chance at Old Trafford while the experience will be made even more special by the fans.
“Last season was tough, I was gutted to miss any game, especially at Old Trafford,” Russo said. “It was great and the women’s team deserve to play here.
“We are so excited, even more so having fans here is going to be amazing. I might be biased but I think that we have the best fans in the league so to have them all here and hopefully give something back to them is going to be really exciting.”
The reverse fixture saw Manchester United battle to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Everton at Walton Hall Park. Russo said that the team have reflected on what was an off-colour performance on Merseyside but The Red Devils are focused towards this weekend’s match and they are excited to get out on the pitch.
She said “I think we always want to go out and prove ourselves, some games don’t go our way but after that game, we looked back at it, we reflected and we learnt from it. You have games like that in the season but I think we are ready, we have been training well and working hard as a group of girls and now we are just excited for Sunday to come.”
Manchester United’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Everton at Old Trafford kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
