London City Lionesses have returned to winning ways in the FA Women’s Championship with a 2-0 victory over neighbours Charlton Athletic at Princes Park.

Karin Muya scored both goals at the end of each half to secure the derby day spoils for The Pride as they ended a run of four games without a win.

In a hard-fought opening, it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score, although quality chances were at a premium. Some good link-up play between Jess King and Katie Robinson presented the latter with the chance to shoot but she dragged her effort wide across goal.

At the other end, Brooke Nunn created space for herself to get a shot off but she could only fire her effort down the throat of visiting keeper Eartha Cumings.

Lily Agg then saw a looping strike stump the base of the post before London City Lionesses took the lead on the stroke on half-time when Muya converted Jamie-Lee Napier’s cross from a couple of yards.

Chances were again few and far between in the second half with London City Lionesses substitute Shanade Hopcroft being one of their brighter sparks. She registered a couple of good efforts on goal but neither tested Cumings.

Harley Bennett saw a downward header gathered by Cumings following a corner kick from the right before Muya made sure of the points when she slotted the ball beyond the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper in the final minute of normal time.

London City Lionesses return to action after the international break with a home fixture against Lewes while Charlton Athletic’s next match is at Blackburn Rovers.
