Arsenal forward Beth Mead played down scoring four goals in England’s 10-0 FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifying victory over North Macedonia in Skopje last night.
Mead was at the forefront of the majority of England’s attacks, linking well with her teammates and popping up in the right places at the right times.
When discussing her goalscoring exploits in the post-match press conference, Mead was very humble about her contribution to the team.
“Just playing for England is an honour for me and to score for my country and help them get the win is a dream come true,” Mead said. “I’m here to help the team, to play the best football that I can individually and as a collective.
“The girls again played really well, North Macedonia put five in defence and we had to break that down. We scored a lot of goals, we’ve created many chances and I am happy to get on the end of a few of them but I am always just here to help.”
Mead has been involved in exactly a third of England’s 63 goals scored in qualifying (12 goals and 9 assists) and the player went on to say that she is feeling good when she walks out on the pitch.
She said “I probably wouldn’t have thought that I would be sat here talking about how much I have contributed to the team at the start of the season but I am really enjoying my football right now, it has been free-flowing individually by myself and as a team. I am glad that the girls are getting on the end of some of the balls and I am getting on the end of some of theirs.
“We are really creating opportunities for each other and we are taking them at the moment.”
England return to action on Tuesday evening when they face Northern Ireland in Belfast in their latest FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier.
