England recorded another 10-0 victory in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifying last night but head coach Sarina Wiegman still believes that her side can sharpen their attacking play.
The Lionesses defeated North Macedonia by that huge scoreline. Beth Mead grabbed the headlines with four goals while Manchester United’s Ella Toone netted a hat-trick.
England converted 10 of their 17 shots on target in the match but head coach Wiegman believes that there is still room for improvement in the final third.
“I’m impressed with how we scored the goals, it doesn’t really matter who scores the goals,” Wiegman said when speaking in the post-match press conference.
“I think we can even be more ruthless in-front of the goal. We scored 10 but still sometimes the timing from the runs, the connection from the cross and how we move in-front of the goal, how we win the second ball and create the chance from that second ball can be better. Still, I think we had some very good moments and scored some very good goals.”
While Mead stole the headlines with her quadruple, Wiegman was keen to share the praise across her attacking players.
She said “Lauren (Hemp) had lots of very good crosses so when you assist, that is very important and Beth (Mead) is very ruthless in-front of goal, she is in the right place at the right time – she makes goalscoring look seamless. Also, Ella (Toone) scored three goals which is really good too.
“Like I always say, you want to score goals and in the end, it doesn’t really matter who puts it in the net, it has to be done.”
England return to action on Tuesday evening when they face Northern Ireland in Belfast in their latest FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 qualifier.
