Coventry United midfielder Mollie Green admitted that she was lost for words after her 97th-minute free-kick at Watford saved her side from relegation to the FA Women’s National League on the final day of the season.
The Red and Greens had to beat Watford at Vicarage Road yesterday to save their FA Women’s Championship status. In a game of few quality chances, Green stepped up in the 97th minute of the game to fire a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner of the Watford net to secure a 1-0 win for her side.
When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time after the match, Green said that the occasion had not sunk in but scoring the winning goal at Vicarage Road was a moment to savour.
“I actually can’t believe it, I only found out it was the 97th minute 10 minutes ago,” Green said. “It’s what dreams are made of scoring at this stadium and in this manner.
“When Grace (Riglar) hit the post, I thought the goal was coming, I thought it all game actually. We just needed the one goal and funnily enough, I got it and I’m just buzzing, what a day.”
Green is well-known for striking mean free-kicks and the player went on to say that she puts a lot of work into her routine.
She joked “One of the girls have actually started calling me Mollie Ward-Prowse. I do practice a lot but it doesn’t matter as long as it comes off in the game.
“Everyone deserves a massive pat on the back for their hard work behind the scenes, the players, the backroom staff, everyone. That was for everyone.”
Coventry United can now look forward to the summer break before laying down further foundations for another season in the FA Women’s Championship.
