Leicester City midfielder Sophie Barker has re-joined her former club Sheffield United on a season-long loan deal.

FAWSL Full-Time were informed of the deal via an official club press release from Sheffield United this afternoon.

The 31-year-old Lincoln-born midfielder made 32 Barclays Women’s Championship appearances for The Blades in her first spell with the club between 2018 and 2020. The player held the captain’s armband during her time with the South Yorkshire club.

Barker joined Leicester City in summer 2020 and went on to help the club win the Barclays Women’s Championship title in her first season with The Foxes. The midfielder made 13 top flight appearances for the East Midlands club last term as Leicester City successfully avoided an immediate relegation.

After re-signing for Sheffield United, Barker said “I’m very happy to be back. My intention was always to come back here when I wanted to retire, because it’s always felt like home to me.

“I just want to enjoy my football again. I want to be a valued member of the team. I know Redders (Neil Redfearn) very well and he was a big part of why I came here because he gives me confidence.”

Barker becomes Sheffield United’s third signing of the summer transfer window.
