Newcastle United have added former Sunderland players Grace Boyes and Daisy Burt to their squad ahead of the new season.

The Magpies announced the news earlier today via a post on their official club website. The deals are part of a quartet of signings which also include Freya Bailes and Emma Wallis.

Boyes and Burt arrive on Tyneside after leaving former club Sunderland at the end of last season. Both players can operate at full-back while Boyes can also slot in at centre-half.

Sunderland re-signed Boyes for their senior squad for the second half of last season after the player had previously featured for The Lady Black Cats at academy level. The youngster made one substitute appearance for the club in the Barclays Women’s Championship which came in a 2-0 defeat to Lewes at The Dripping Pan in January. Boyes was also brought on against Birmingham City in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup as the Wearside club went down 2-1 in extra-time.

Burt was handed a first team shirt by Sunderland boss Melanie Reay midway through last season after impressing within their academy system. The player was given her senior debut by the club in their 7-0 home defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup. She was an unused substitute on six occasions in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

Newcastle United have ambitious plans to reach the elite game in the future and they will hope that their new signings will help them put down some strong foundations for success.
