Former Aston Villa defender Anita Asante has been appointed first team coach at Barclays Women’s Championship club Bristol City.
The Robins announced the news earlier today via a post on their official club website.
The 37-year-old centre-back hung up her boots at the end of last season following a senior playing career which spanned almost two decades. Asante represented English clubs Arsenal, Chelsea (twice) and Aston Villa in her long career while she also played overseas in the United States and Sweden.
On the international stage, the defender collected 71 senior caps for England while she was a member of the Team GB side which competed at the Olympic Games London 2012.
Asante has a wealth of experience which will surely be a huge benefit to new club Bristol City as they look to challenge for promotion back to the Barclays Women’s Super League.
After joining The Robins, Asante said “I’m delighted to be here and have the opportunity to work with a great crop of players. It’s a really motivated group and the staff have welcomed me in so I’m hoping I can use my knowledge and experience from my playing days in my coaching journey.
“Hopefully I can bring experience from playing at several clubs at the highest level in the women’s game but also my international career as well, as I have played in different countries for different managers and different styles of play.”
Asante will begin her new role upon the conclusion of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.
