Southampton have announced the marquee signing of former Barclays Women’s Championship top scorer Katie Wilkinson.

The Saints announced the transfer via a post on their official club website this evening.

Wilkinson joins Southampton on a free transfer after recently leaving Coventry United. The move allows the player to retain a full-time footballing career with The Saints having moved to professional operations following their promotion to the elite game in May.

The forward has struck fear into opposition defenders in recent seasons. Wilkinson netted 33 Barclays Women’s Championship goals in 34 games during a two-season spell with Sheffield United, topping the league’s goalscoring charts in the process. The player also managed to net seven league goals for Coventry United last season despite the club’s on and off-field struggles.

After completing her move to Southampton, Wilkinson said “I’m really excited. A few of the girls have shown me around and it’s an amazing environment to be in.

“I’d kept an eye on Southampton for the past few seasons and the club has been going from strength-to-strength.

“Now I’m just really grateful and excited that I’m a part of it. I hope that I can now be a part of the growth too.”

Wilkinson is Southampton’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window.
