Durham forward Emily Roberts has announced her retirement at the age of 28.

The Wildcats confirmed the news this afternoon via a post on their official club website.

Roberts joined Durham in 2016 and she saw her career blossom alongside the development of the club. She has helped the team climb up the Barclays Women’s Championship table, contributing some memorable goals along the way.

With Roberts having seen her personal life change over the summer, she has determined it to be the right time to retire.

After announcing her decision, Roberts said “After recently getting married, I’ve decided it was the right time to retire from football and move on to the next chapter of my life.

“I have really enjoyed my career and Durham has been a big part of that after spending the majority of my senior career at the club.

“The staff and girls made it a lovely environment and I feel I have played some of my best football playing for Durham.

“I would like to thank all the staff, players and fans for their support throughout my time there, and I wish the club all the best for the future. I will definitely be coming to watch.”

In her last season at Maiden Castle, Roberts made 18 appearances in a Durham shirt in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
