Leicester City boss Kirk to hunt far and wide for January transfers

New Leicester City boss Willie Kirk says that the club will be active in the January transfer window with additions from overseas leagues being a real possibility.

The Foxes are rock bottom of the Barclays Women’s Super League table with zero points from seven games. Based on their early season form, it is very difficult not to see Leicester City playing Barclays Women’s Championship football again next season.

Kirk was appointed the new Leicester City manager on Thursday and has been tasked with upsetting the odds and guiding the club to safety. He watched on as his side were defeated 4-0 by Arsenal at The King Power Stadium yesterday.

Leicester City went into the new season a little short of quality options in their squad and Kirk has confirmed that he will be busy in the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his pool of players.

“We will definitely make additions in January,” Kirk said. “There has been a lot of work done on that side of it in terms of identifying players. We missed out on a number of players in the summer, especially towards the end of the window which was frustrating.

“We’ve done a lot of work, there is budget there and we know what we need to do so watch this space.”

New Zealand international CJ Bott and America-born defender Erin Simon are the only overseas players in the Leicester City squad and Kirk went on to suggest that he will look to increase the number of nationalities in the dressing room in January.

He said “I’ve got a good history working in Scandinavia, I’ve signed a lot of Scandinavians in the past, top players. I’ve previously signed three Swedes, a couple of Danish players, the Norwegian vice-captain at the time when she signed for Everton so I know the Scandinavian market really well. I think Scandinavian players can adapt to the English game quite smoothly and if they are not Scandinavians, if they’ve played in Scandinavia because that can help as well.

“It is obviously a market that I know well and I’ll look at for January. The fact that the Swedish season has just finished makes it the natural time for some of them to move. Of course, it is a market that we will explore and it is good to have different cultures in your dressing room, a different way of thinking and different types of characters.

“We will definitely explore land outwith the UK.”

Leicester City return to action following the international break when they travel to The Chigwell Construction Stadium to face West Ham United on Sunday 20 November.
