Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall says that he is ‘very concerned’ about the injury sustained by attacker Vivianne Miedema this evening.
The Dutch international appeared to twist her knee in first half injury time of tonight’s 1-0 defeat to Lyon at the Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. Miedema was distraught as she left the field on a stretcher and the immediate concern is that the player has joined the long list of elite footballers to have sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.
When speaking to the media after the match, Eidevall could not confirm the full impact of the injury but he admitted that he is very concerned.
“I don’t know,” said Eidevall when asked whether he could provide an update on Miedema’s injury. “I haven’t spoken to her or the doctors so I don’t have any updates but right now, that takes a lot of my thoughts.
“I’m very concerned over that, of course, but we had to stay focused during the game and focused on our performance.
“I’m sorry, I don’t have any update at all on that situation.”
The Arsenal players will have felt Miedema’s physical and mental pain going into half-time but Eidevall said that his side had to remain completely professional throughout.
He said “After the game, we are concerned but we are still professional. We don’t let anything take away our focus from what we are doing, we stick to what we need to do on the pitch, after we are concerned. During (the game), we are 100 percent professional with what we have to do.”
Arsenal complete their participation in the UEFA Women’s Champions League’s group stage with a fixture against FC Zürich in Switzerland next Wednesday.
