Arsenal attacker Vivianne Miedema has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and will undergo surgery in the coming days.
The Dutch international twisted her knee during the first half of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to French club Lyon in a UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage match at the Emirates Stadium last Thursday.
The immediate concern was that Miedema had sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury and The Gunners have today confirmed via a medical update on their official club website that the forward has suffered that type of injury.
Miedema will now miss the remainder of the season while she is also a significant doubt for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 which starts in July. Arsenal have not yet put a timescale on Miedema’s return to fitness but it does seem likely that she will not be available for selection again until after the start of the 2023/2024 season.
Arsenal have now lost two key players to Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries in recent weeks. England international forward Beth Mead also ruptured her ACL during The Gunners’ 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium last month. Like Miedema, Mead will also be sidelined for the remainder of the current campaign.
