Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Jens Scheuer has revealed that he watched back the 6-2 defeat to Aston Villa eight times during the international break.

Following a couple of progressive results, The Seagulls took a step backwards in their final match before the February international window as they were demolished by an impressive Aston Villa side at Broadfield Stadium.

Despite Scheuer having assembled a new-look defence since his arrival at Brighton & Hove Albion in December, the defeat came in a similar fashion to some of the club’s real low points that they suffered in the first half of the season. Scheuer has been busy reviewing his side’s latest performance in detail during the international break, reliving the defeat eight times.

“I had a lot of time over the international break,” Scheuer joked when speaking in a Brighton & Hove Albion press conference.

“For me as a coach, I go through every single situation with the players. I talk to them to get their thoughts about what they think they should do in this moment, what they should do better and how I can support them to handle situations better.

“This takes time, I had the time, so I watched the game eight times.”

Scheuer will be hoping for a positive reaction from his Brighton & Hove Albion side this weekend. The Seagulls play host to second tier club Coventry United in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round. Scheuer explained that having players away on international duty has been far from ideal for his side’s preparation for the game.

He said “We want to go as far as we can in the FA Cup. Coventry are the underdogs and we are the favourites but not having the team together to prepare isn’t easy for us. It is not an easy game for me, it is maybe more difficult than preparing for Chelsea or Manchester City.

“We have to be careful, we have to be serious, I expect my team to put their full focus on this game. We have to show the strengths that we have shown in the past prior to the game against Aston Villa.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Coventry United kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
