Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim head coach Amy Merricks says that this evening’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea presents a great challenge for her side.

Merricks was appointed the Sussex club’s interim boss on Monday evening after head coach Jens Scheuer left his position by mutual consent. Scheuer had been in the role for a little over two months.

Brighton & Hove Albion return to Barclays Women’s Super League action for the first time since mid-February this evening when they travel to Kingsmeadow to take on reigning champions Chelsea. There is a huge gulf in quality between the two sides, however, Brighton & Hove Albion’s interim boss Merricks is looking forward to the challenge.

“I think it’s a great challenge to have,” Merricks said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “As players and coaches, we thrive off these kinds of challenges.

“I absolutely think that if we as a group apply ourselves to what we are good at; make sure we are hard to beat and disciplined when we need to be, there’s no reason why we can’t get something from this game. We need to make sure that everybody is completely clear, focused and they know what we need to do to achieve a result for the club.”

Brighton & Hove Albion face two tough opponents in the space of four days with Manchester City providing the opposition at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday. Merricks believes that her side can take the positives from a couple of good results against Chelsea and Manchester City in the past.

She said “One of the benefits that we have is that we have beaten Chelsea before, drawn against Manchester City before and we have shown that we can perform. In my opinion, if we come together as a team, we have every possibility of being able to get something from the game on Wednesday night and from Sunday’s game as well.”

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 7.30pm this evening.
