Manchester United all-but-secured UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification with a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Leigh Sports Village on Sunday afternoon.

The result put The Red Devils six points clear of neighbours Manchester City with two games to play. Manchester United’s superior goal difference means that they should now be assured of European football next season.

Despite Manchester United enjoying their most successful season to date, head coach Marc Skinner still feels that there’s more come to from his side.

“The most points we’ve ever achieved in a season, the best clean sheet record – I think we’ve equalled it today, three different goalscorers again, three points, there’s loads of magnificent stuff,” Skinner said when speaking in the post-match media huddle.

“For us, it’d be complacent to think that we were the very best of ourselves. I think we gave Tottenham their chances, I don’t think they earnt them. We were a little bit naive at times.”

Despite having one or two minor grumbles, the Manchester United boss heaped praise on his side for their attitude and togetherness.

He said “We’re the epitome of a team; we work for each other, we play for each other, we defend for each other, we attack for each other. I think that’s what’s so special about this team.

“We’re doing our job each week and sitting top of the table. We’re fired, we’re ready, we want to be ready. We want to push ourselves as far as we can go, to extremes this season. If we can do that, I’m sure we’ll achieve our targets.”

If Manchester United do find a way of reaching their targets, they will owe a huge debt of gratitude to their fans who always come out in force. In total, 5,796 fans were in attendance at the Leigh Sports Village and they certainly made their presence felt according to Skinner.

“It is different when we play here,” he said. “I think you can feel it, it’s an intimidating atmosphere. People don’t play their very best when they come here.”

An army of vocal Manchester United fans will take to the road this weekend when the club contest their first Vitality Women’s FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley. The match kicks-off at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon.
