Chelsea attacker Pernille Harder says that the team’s winning mentality is a major factor behind their continued success.
The Blues added another trophy to their collection this afternoon as they defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final.
When speaking to the media after the match, Harder said that the team’s winning mentality is the main reason why Chelsea continue to be the most successful club in England in recent times.
“We have a good winning mentality in the group,” Harder said. “We have a lot of leaders and it’s a squad with so many good players.
“It’s just top players, everyone is a top player, so in training we push each other.”
Chelsea struggled in the first half against Manchester United while they were also sluggish in the early stages of the second period. Harder’s introduction from the bench in the 57th minute was a major catalyst for The Blues going on to claim control of the contest. The Dane said that manager Emma Hayes gave her specific instructions which were expertly carried out.
She said “We talked about running in-behind a little bit more. She wanted me to bring energy and use my experience.”
A change in formation saw Harder join Sam Kerr in attack. The pair combined in two dangerous attacking moves in quick succession. Kerr first played in Harder who scuffed her shot at Manchester United keeper Mary Earps before the pair produced the game’s only goal when the roles were reversed. Harder said that playing with Kerr can be a dangerous combination.
“Sam is an amazing player and when we play upfront with each other, we can be very dangerous together,” Harder said.
“We can both be dangerous individually but together we are even more dangerous.”
Harder and Chelsea return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to West Ham United in the Barclays Women’s Super League.
