Chelsea have confirmed that captain Madga Eriksson will leave the club when her contract expires this summer.
The Blues announced the news via a post on their official club website just a short time ago.
Eriksson joined Chelsea in summer 2017 following a spell with Swedish club Linköpings FC. The player has gone on to become a Blues legend, making 183 appearances for the club in all competitions in which she has scored 11 goals. Eriksson has won a whole host of trophies with Chelsea including four Barclays Women’s Super League titles, four Vitality Women’s FA Cups, two FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cups and the FA Women’s Community Shield. She was also a member of the Chelsea side which were UEFA Women’s Champions League runners-up in 2020/2021.
Eriksson will now take up a new challenge next season. The player’s next club has not yet been confirmed but she has been strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich.
After her Chelsea departure was confirmed, an emotional Eriksson said “It is really difficult to talk about or even say out loud, it feels kind of surreal. The news that I have is that I will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season.
“I’ve had an unbelievable time, the best time of my life. It has been six unbelievable years with my teammates, with the fans and with the club and I feel so privileged to have been on this journey with them.
“We have really established ourselves as one of the best clubs in the world and it has been such an amazing journey. I am really happy and just proud of the whole journey and everything that we have been through together, it is mixed emotions for sure.”
Eriksson’s Chelsea teammate and partner Pernille Harder is also expected to leave the club this summer. The Dane seems destined to join Bayern Munich with Eriksson.
