Relegated Barclays Women’s Championship club Coventry United will undergo a complete identity change over the summer with the club to be known as Rugby Borough from next season.

The Warwickshire outfit announced the news via a post on their official club Twitter account this morning.

The club have revealed that they will play their home matches at Kilsby Lane in Rugby, a 35-acre facility which was previously built at a cost of around £2.5 million. The new Rugby Borough club will also train at the venue.

Coventry United have had strong links to Rugby Borough in recent years with the club having used their facilities to train.

It has been confirmed that there will be no change of ownership as a result of the move while the playing and coaching staff will TUPE transfer from Coventry United to Rugby Borough. The club will change their playing colours in-line with the current Rugby Borough club as part of the move.

Coventry United have had a turbulent period in the Barclays Women’s Championship. The club have found themselves constantly battling relegation. The Red and Greens turned full-time in summer 2021 but found themselves financially crippled and heading for liquidation. Current owner Lewis Taylor stepped in to save the club in early 2022 and while they survived relegation in 2021/2022, the switch back to part-time status that summer made Barclays Women’s Championship survival a much tougher challenge.

Rugby Borough will begin life in the FA Women’s National League next season.
