Former Liverpool defender Rhiannon Roberts has agreed to join Spanish top flight club Real Betis on a free transfer.

The Green and Whites announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

Roberts has signed a two-year deal with Real Betis and she will link-up with former Liverpool teammate Rinsola Babajide at the Spanish club.

The 32-year-old centre-back was one of six out of contract players to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Roberts had spent five years with The Reds in which she made 96 appearances for the club. Roberts helped Liverpool to win the Barclays Women’s Championship title in 2021/2022 before playing her part in the club’s successful campaign in the Barclays Women’s Super League this season. The Welsh international has plenty left to offer in her career and she is now taking up an exciting new challenge with Real Betis.

Roberts joins a Real Betis side that have been a constant fixture in the Spanish top flight in recent years. The Green and Whites have remained very competitive at the top level of the Spanish game despite heavy investment at various rival clubs. Real Betis finished the 2022/2023 season in 12th position in the league table.

Roberts will have plenty of time to settle in at her new club before the new finetwork Liga F season gets underway in autumn.
