England lacked ruthlessness against Haiti says Wiegman

England head coach Sarina Wiegman says that her side lacked ruthlessness in their 1-0 victory over Haiti in Brisbane.

Georgia Stanway netted the only goal of the match from the penalty spot in the first half at Suncorp Stadium. England created chances but they failed to score from open play for a fourth consecutive match.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, England boss Wiegman said that her side lacked ruthlessness and they need to improve both their delivery into the box and their finishing.

“I would say ruthlessness (is missing),” Wiegman said when analysing where England need to be better. “Sometimes the connection with the cross, the timing of the cross, where the cross actually ends in the box and the connection in front of the goal; little things like that.

“We were very close to scoring a goal a couple of times but then of course, their defence was tough.

“We have to keep trying and keep working on it, starting again tomorrow.”

Denmark are up next for England and Wiegman wants to see her side move the ball quicker and streamline their play.

She said “We always talk about our style of play and our game plan against the opponent which was Haiti. We will play a different match against a Denmark team who have a different style of play, although I do think that they will drop deep too and start from a very organised defence which is a bit more predictable.

“What we take from this game is that we need to move the ball quicker and have less touches because we touched the ball a couple of times and invited duels and they were really powerful and athletic. The rotations out wide were a little better in the second half.

“We need to keep creating chances. We had a lot of crosses but we need to improve the quality to increase the chances of scoring.”

England’s second group match against Denmark takes place in Sydney on Friday morning.
