Durham captain Sarah Wilson was pleased to see her side dig deep to record a 2-0 victory against Lewes at Maiden Castle yesterday.

The two sides were deadlocked at 0-0 going into the final 10 minutes of the game in the North East but late goals from Amy Andrews and Poppy Pritchard secured what had seemed like an unlikely win for The Wildcats.

When speaking to the media after the match, Durham captain Wilson was pleased that her team dug deep to grind out the victory.

“They came a really long way with a good game plan and they were difficult to break down,” Wilson said. “I know they’ve signed some young players but they’re an experienced team in the league and have some really good experienced players.

“It was difficult. We had to really dig deep to get the three points.”

Durham have collected four points from their opening two games in this season’s Barclays Women’s Championship and The Wildcats now have a platform to progress. Wilson said that the club are pleased with their solid points return so far.

She said “We are happy (with four points). It was tough last week against Watford, it was really difficult going there and we know for a fact that they will take some important points from their opponents.

“We are really happy with the start, especially with the win at home, that’s what we wanted.”

Durham travel to the VBS Community Stadium in Sutton on Sunday afternoon when they take on Crystal Palace in their next match.
