Lack of concentration costing Sheffield United dearly says Morgan

Sheffield United manager Jonathan Morgan says that a lack of concentration is costing his side points in the early weeks of the new Barclays Women’s Championship season.

The Blades are now winless in three matches after they threw away a one-goal lead in their 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park yesterday.

Isobel Goodwin volleyed in the opening goal for The Blades after just two minutes and they were good value for their lead until second half errors allowed Blackburn Rovers to claim control of the proceedings.

When speaking to Sheffield United’s official media team after the match, manager Morgan admitted that poor concentration is really costing his side.

“We’ve conceded four goals this season in three games and every single goal involves some kind of pass from us to them in the final third,” Morgan said.

“It’s getting to the point where the girls are switching off; it’s mentality, it’s concentration. It’s at the point where there’s not a lot you can say until they stay concentrated.

“It’s frustrating because first half we were really dominant, we created some significant chances and if you look at the expected goals, it was harder for us to miss them than score them. Somehow we missed them.

“We know that we are creating the chances and getting in the right areas. Even though Blackburn came out for the second half and we didn’t adjust, we still created the better of the chances but they took their two and the game was over.”

Morgan has put together a relatively young team this season. He went on to say that it could take time for things to really come together, however, the starting point is cutting out those errors.

He said “It’s a very young group. There are a lot of young girls that have got a lot of potential. Even if you look at Charlotte Newsham, she’s 23 and she’s still extremely young but she’s one of our most experienced players.

“We understand that this is a work-in-progress, it doesn’t just happen overnight but we’ve got to cut out these repetitive errors. Four goals conceded have not been down to a team breaking us down or playing us around the park, they’ve all come from our bad passes in their attacking third.”

Sheffield United will look to finally get their first win of the season when they host Lewes at Bramall Lane on Sunday.
