Amy Andrews’ injury time goal helped Durham to record a 1-0 victory over London City Lionesses at Maiden Castle this afternoon.
The Wildcats carved out the better chances over the 90 minutes and they made the breakthrough in second half stoppage time as forward Andrews finished off a neat attacking move.
Durham went into the game looking to make amends following last weekend’s 9-1 defeat at Crystal Palace. The Wildcats went close in the third minute when Andrews forced a good save from visiting keeper Grace Moloney. Jess Clarke was then inches away from breaking the deadlock midway through the half but her effort went narrowly wide across goal.
Andrews tested Moloney again with a shot from 20 yards before Poppy Pritchard fired straight at the London City Lionesses keeper after being gifted possession by Emma Mukandi. Pritchard struck another effort on goal at the end of the half but Moloney was again able to get her body behind the shot.
It was Durham who went closest to netting early in the second half. Clarke’s cross was met by Lauren Briggs but she glanced the ball wide with her head.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah then went close for London City Lionesses with a shot that whistled across goal before Moloney produced a wonderful save to deny Andrews when the Durham forward looked certain to score.
Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages. Durham substitute Saoirse Noonan and London City Lionesses forward Danielle Carter both found themselves in good positions to score but neither player could significantly trouble the opposition goalkeeper.
The game looked set to end goalless until Andrews popped up with the winner for Durham deep in second half stoppage time.
The two sides now enter the international break before returning to action in a fortnight’s time.
