Sheffield United manager Jonathan Morgan was delighted to see his team record their first win of the season on Sunday in front of a home crowd at Bramall Lane.

The Blades came away with three points following a 1-0 win over Lewes. Forward Isobel Goodwin scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute.

Speaking to WSL Full Time after the game, Morgan admitted that he was delighted to see his side finally get off the mark with their first win.

“Naturally, we are very delighted,” he said. “I think we were value for money today in terms of the victory and I think another day, we could have had a couple more goals with some of the chances that we created.”

The win takes Sheffield United up to ninth in the Barclays Women’s Championship table with four points from four games. Having suffered back-to-back losses to Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers, Morgan lamented his team’s tough start to their campaign.

He said “It’s been a bit of a difficult start to the season, so we’re glad to get over the line, get this victory and now we’ve got to build on it.

“It’s not just about today, it’s about also the first three games before this and there have been a lot of positives in those games as well.”

Morgan and his team spent time celebrating and soaking up the jovial atmosphere with their fans after the match. The Sheffield United boss paid tribute to the fans for backing his newly-formed team.

“They give us that extra push,” Morgan said. “It makes you make that final sprint, that final block and just that final defensive decision that you need sometimes.

“We like to be in tune with our fans and we want our fans to enjoy the event. That’s why we do go over and spend a lot of time with them.”

Sheffield United’s next fixture is away at Crystal Palace after the international break. When asked how The Blades would prepare against The Eagles, Morgan highlighted out of possession improvements.

He said “We just need to make sure we know where we’re vulnerable. I know that we’ve got a lot of good attacking threat but what we’ve got to look at is when we’re tracking back on the transition defensively, so that’s what we’ll focus on for Palace because they look to break the speed.

“We’ll go and play our best and see what happens.”

Sheffield United travel to Crystal Palace for their next match on Saturday 30 September 2023.
