Eidevall wants Arsenal to be more effective earlier in games

Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall says that it is important that his side become more effective in the final third earlier in games.

Four of The Gunners’ six goals scored this season have come in the second half of matches while they are yet to win a game by more than a single goal margin.

Injury time goals have rescued points in games against Manchester United and Aston Villa and head coach Eidevall says that Arsenal cannot rely on surviving by scoring late goals or by hanging onto slender leads.

“From a mentality perspective, the players have been excellent,” Eidevall said when speaking in an Arsenal press conference. “They have kept their composure really well. Even if we have been tight for time in a couple of games, they’ve continued to make good decisions and have been able to stack situations up on each other to create a lot of pressure. That part has been really good.

“I don’t want us to leave things that late and be depending on those margins because sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn’t. As a team, we need to be able to create more and capitalise better on what we create earlier in games to be able to have a greater scoreline more often.”

Arsenal face Manchester City in their next match at Meadow Park on Sunday. The Gunners return to Borehamwood for the first time since May. While Arsenal’s long-term future is at the Emirates Stadium, Eidevall believes that his side will always get great home support regardless of the venue where they are playing.

He said “It is a long time since we have been at Meadow Park, Aston Villa on the final day of last season being the last time we were there. We have always had great experiences at Meadow Park; we have great support and it is a very intimate atmosphere.

“We are at a cross-road at the minute where we are having great experiences at the Emirates but I understand that it is not that easy to move all of our games there. There are a lot of logistics and know-how that feed into that. We are playing more and more games at the Emirates each year, so it is the natural process but it needs a little bit of time.

“As always, we look forward to playing in front of the home fans. It is a sell-out on Sunday, so we are going to try and do our very best.”

Arsenal’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sunday afternoon. The match has been declared a sell-out.
