Chelsea kick-off their 2023/2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign this evening with a tricky tie against Real Madrid at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano.
The Blues are yet to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League but they will be hoping to make a great start to their latest title bid by recording a solid result in Madrid.
Ahead of the match, WSL Full-Time have reviewed the UEFA statistics and here are three things to note about Chelsea’s trip to Real Madrid.
Chelsea unbeaten against Real Madrid
The two clubs were drawn together in last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. Chelsea safely negotiated their way through both meetings, taking four points in the process.
Goals from Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert helped Chelsea to record a 2-0 victory in the first meeting at Kingmeadow. In the return fixture, Caroline Weir’s first half goal for Real Madrid was cancelled out by a Misa Rodríguez own goal as the two sides battled out a 1-1 draw.
Strong records for both clubs
Real Madrid go into this evening’s tie unbeaten in their last six home fixtures in European competition while The Whites have lost just one of their six matches at home in the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage. The Spaniards have won both of their previous group stage fixtures on Matchday 1.
Chelsea’s group stage points tally of 16 in 2022/2023 was higher than any other club. The Blues have only lost once in the group stage over the course of the last three seasons. They’re unbeaten in their last six group stage fixtures while they have kept eight clean sheets in their last 10 group stage games.
Chelsea yet to win in Spain
Chelsea have faced Spanish opposition on seven occasions in the UEFA Women’s Champions League (W2, D3, L2). Both of their victories have come on home soil.
The South West Londoners defeated Atlético Madrid 2-0 at Kingsmeadow in 2020/2021 before beating Real Madrid by the same scoreline at the same venue last season. Both away fixtures against the Madrid clubs ended in 1-1 draws.
Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League fixture against Real Madrid kicks-off at 8pm this evening.
