Everton manager Brian Sørensen says that the injury crisis at the club is going in the wrong direction ahead of Wednesday’s Merseyside derby against Liverpool in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup.

The two sides meet at Walton Hall Park as they contest a dead rubber fixture which neither club really wants on the calendar.

When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Everton boss Sørensen said that his side continue to be hit with injuries. Karen Holmgaard is the latest casualty for The Blue Girls after being ruled out of the final two games of 2023.

“We are low on numbers,” Sørensen said “Karen Holmgaard has a lower back injury/hip injury, so she’s going to be out of the last two games (before Christmas). We had seven out (at the weekend) and now we have eight. It’s going in the wrong direction but there’s not much we can do about it, they’ll all be back after Christmas at some point.

“We are low on numbers but we were at the weekend and still got a good result, so we will try and do it again.”

Sørensen went on to confirm that he will have a few youth players in the squad against Liverpool with some in contention for starting places.

He said “I think we have to make the team ready for (Manchester) City, that’s the priority, so we will see a lot of young players that we don’t know much about make the team. It’s massive for some of them to be starting in the derby. I’m sure they will give everything to play for the blue shirt and that’s our aim tomorrow. We will have some experienced players on the pitch also, but we will see a lot of changes at half-time. I’m excited for the game.”
