Liverpool have provided an update on the condition of centre-back Gemma Bonner following a clash of heads in The Reds’ 2-1 victory at Manchester United yesterday.

Bonner was clattered by Manchester United forward Rachel Williams as she produced an honest challenge for the ball. The incident resulted in Bonner leaving the pitch with blood pouring from her wound.

Liverpool have this evening provided an update on the player’s condition via a post on their official club website. It is understood that Bonner is fit and well. She has received stitches for a facial laceration and the club are now following concussion protocols. At this stage, there is no reason to suggest that Bonner won’t return to training with the Liverpool squad after the Christmas break.

Commenting on the injury, club doctor, Amelia Woodhouse said “Gemma lost consciousness temporarily and suffered a facial laceration during the incident.

“After treatment, she was able to walk off the pitch with the assistance of medical staff and taken into the medical room at Leigh for further assessment.

“She was attended to by the doctor and received a number of stitches around her lip for the laceration. She is now following concussion protocols under the supervision of the club medical team.”

Bonner has been a huge success in the Liverpool side this season. She has been a member of a defensive unit that has been breached on just 11 occasions in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Only Manchester City and Arsenal have conceded less goals than Matt Beard’s Liverpool side.

Liverpool’s next fixture is not until 14 January 2023 therefore there is a period of time for Bonner to complete her recovery.
