Sunderland defender Brianna Westrup has signed a contract extension with the club ahead of the new season.

The Lady Black Cats announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

Westrup was already under contract until next summer but she will now remain with the Wearsiders for an additional year.

The defender joined Sunderland from Rangers in summer 2022. She has gone on to captain the team after impressing manager Melanie Reay. Westrup has made 41 appearances for Sunderland in the Barclays Women’s Championship in which she has scored four goals. The player has been a rock at the heart of The Lady Black Cats’ defence.

Westrup is a key player for Sunderland and the club have acted quickly to retain her services until summer 2026.

After signing on again with Sunderland, Westrup said “I’ve really enjoyed my time here so far. I feel like if my life is really good outside of football as well as inside, I don’t feel a reason to leave, so I’m thrilled to extend my stay. I think a lot of it comes down to the people that are here, the staff, the players, they’ve made me feel very welcome ever since I came through the door.”

Westrup is the seventh player to sign a new contract with Sunderland since the end of last season.
