Sunderland have completed the signing of Welsh international defender Rhiannon Roberts on a two-year deal.

The Lady Black Cats confirmed the news via a post on their official club website this evening.

The 34-year-old centre-back joins Sunderland off the back of a two-year spell with Spanish finetwork Liga F club Real Betis.

Roberts has a wealth of experience in the professional game. After starting out with Blackburn Rovers, the defender went on to enjoy successful spells with Doncaster Rovers Belles and Liverpool. She won the Barclays WSL2 title with both of those clubs.

On the international stage, Roberts has collected 79 caps for the Welsh national team while she has scored two goals. She will represent her country at the upcoming UEFA Women’s EURO.

After adding Roberts to her squad, Sunderland boss Melanie Reay said “We are thrilled to be able to bring Rhiannon to Sunderland. She is a player who is aligned to our vision and brings an abundance of international and Super League experience. This will add huge value to our team along with her exceptional leadership qualities.

“We wish Wales every success in the upcoming EUROs and will be supporting Rhiannon throughout the tournament.”
