Arsenal sign Swedish international defender Holmberg

Arsenal have completed the signing of Swedish international defender Smilla Holmberg.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Gunners this morning.

The 19-year-old joins Arsenal from Swedish OBOS Damallsvenskan club Hammarby IF. She has signed a long-term deal with the North Londoners.

Holmberg started out in Hammarby’s youth system before being promoted to the senior side in 2022. She has gone on to win the OBOS Damallsvenskan title with ‘Bajen’ while she has also won two domestic cups. Holmberg has turned out for Hammarby on more than 50 occasions in league competition.

On the international stage, Holmberg has been capped by Sweden on nine occasions while she has scored one goal.

After joining Arsenal, Holmberg said “It’s always been my dream to play for Arsenal. This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture.

“I’m excited to start this new chapter, to continue developing my game in a demanding environment and to compete at the highest level. My ambitions align with the club’s and I want to help win silverware here.”

Holmberg is Arsenal’s first January transfer window addition.
