Everton midfielder Karen Holmgaard has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Toffees announced the news via a post on their official club X account this morning.

The 26-year-old Danish international sustained the injury in the early stages of Everton’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup fourth round tie against West Bromwich Albion at the Alexander Stadium on Thursday night. Holmgaard went down with the injury in the fourth minute and had to be replaced by Clare Wheeler. Everton went on to win the tie 5-0 thanks to a double from Yuka Momiki and goals from Ornella Vignola, Toni Payne and Issy Hobson.

Speaking to the media after the match, Everton manager Brian Sørensen admitted that he feared the worst for Holmgaard. The player’s injury has now been fully-assessed by the Everton medical team and it has been determined that she has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).  Holmgaard will now undergo surgery before beginning the lengthy rehabilitation process. The midfielder will miss the remainder of the season and is likely to remain sidelined for the start of the 2026/2027 campaign.

After seeing-off West Bromwich Albion on Thursday, Everton will now enter the Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round draw which will be conducted this evening.
