Sunderland have completed the impressive signing of former Crystal Palace forward Elise Hughes on a permanent deal.

The Lady Black Cats announced news of the transfer via a post on their official club website this evening.

The 25-year-old striker joins Sunderland upon the expiry of her contract at former club Crystal Palace. She has signed a two-year deal on Wearside.

Hughes spent four years with Crystal Palace after joining the club from neighbours Charlton Athletic in summer 2022. The player twice won promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League with The Eagles. She netted 16 league goals in Crystal Palace’s championship-winning campaign in 2023/2024. In total, Hughes scored 34 goals for Crystal Palace in 89 games.

After joining Sunderland, Hughes said “It feels amazing to be here. This is a huge moment for me, and I’m excited to get started. The club has incredible ambition and a proud history, so it’s a really exciting time to be part of it.

“I’ve spent a number of years in this league and have enjoyed success along the way. I hope to bring that experience to the squad and contribute as many goals and assists as I can.”

Hughes is Sunderland’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
