Liverpool have secured their first signing of the summer with the arrival of Republic of Ireland international forward Leanne Kiernan according to reports on The Reds’ official website.
The player moves to Merseyside following her departure from former club West Ham United. She spent three seasons with the East London club.
Kiernan will reunite with her former manager Matt Beard at Prenton Park and the forward will be expected to play a significant role in Liverpool’s push for promotion back to the Barclays FA Women’s Super League. The attacker will be sporting the number nine jersey for The Reds, a shirt which was recently vacated by Danish forward Amalie Thestrup after she and the club parted ways.
After signing on at Prenton Park, Kiernan said “The club is a great name and it definitely has great ambition. I really enjoyed the phone call with Beardie, and it grabbed me towards Liverpool and it’s just an exciting time to be here.”
Liverpool finished third in the FA Women’s Championship this season, a disappointing 11 points behind champions Leicester City and the league is shaping up to be even more competitive in 2021/2022. With more and more clubs set to be go partially or entirely full-time professional, the race for promotion could be even tighter. Consequently, Beard’s recruitment this summer could be make or break for Liverpool as they look to reclaim their Barclays FA Women’s Super League status at the end of the 2021/2022 season. It is expected that more players will follow Kiernan in joining Liverpool and we may yet see a few more of Beard’s former players running out at Prenton Park.
