Manchester City dealt further injury blow as defender Houghton sustains ankle injury

Manchester City have been dealt a further injury blow with the news that centre-back Steph Houghton has sustained an ankle injury whilst on international duty with England.

The 33-year-old Durham-born defender was set to captain the Lionesses in their FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia in Southampton but she has pulled out of the squad as a result of her injury.

The Football Association confirmed Houghton’s withdrawal in an official press release. It is understood that the injury was sustained in England’s pre-match training session last night. Arsenal defender Leah Williamson will now pick up the captain’s armband in Houghton’s absence for the fixtures against North Macedonia this evening and Luxembourg on Tuesday.

Speaking following Houghton’s withdrawal, England head coach Sarina Wiegman said “First and foremost, we would like to wish Steph a speedy recovery and hope to see her back fit soon.

“This is also an exciting opportunity for Leah Williamson to wear the captain’s armband at senior level for the first time and I look forward to seeing her in action.

“We hope to see as many of our fans as possible at this evening’s match as we get our World Cup campaign underway.”

England’s opening FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against North Macedonia in Southampton kicks-off at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
