Arsenal defender Leah Williamson says that the time is right for more England games to be staged at Wembley Stadium.
The Lionesses face Northern Ireland at the national stadium tomorrow in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier. The game will be the first competitive England fixture to be staged at Wembley.
When speaking in the pre-match press conference, Arsenal defender Williamson said that she believes that the time is right for the Lionesses to be a more regular feature at Wembley.
“I hope so, I think it’s the right time now,” the player said when asked whether more games should be held at Wembley. “I think the women’s game has got to that level where we can bring the people in to see it.
“It’s a good day for us as players, it helps us grow and as a country as a whole, I don’t know why we wouldn’t want to celebrate high performance sport on the biggest stage.”
Ahead of the match, it has been revealed that Williamson will retain the captain’s armband after doing a great job as skipper in last month’s qualifiers against North Macedonia and Luxembourg. The player said that holding the armband was a real honour but she is not focusing too much on being the permanent captain, she is just keeping her head down and getting on with the job.
She said “It is the most sought after job in football I suppose isn’t it. It is not something that I have ever chased, it is not something that’s on the agenda, it is just a matter of circumstance at the minute.
“I am not looking past tomorrow which I will enjoy as much as I possibly can.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier between England and Northern Ireland kicks-off at 5.15pm on Saturday evening. Tickets remain on general sale and are available here.
