Durham were always going to be tough opponents for Manchester City says Taylor

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that tonight’s opponents Durham were always going to be difficult to play against and he is simply happy to see his side return to winning ways.

The Wildcats are currently top of the FA Women’s Championship table thanks largely to their strong defensive unit and some clinical finishing, particularly from set plays.

Manchester City recorded a 3-0 win against The Wildcats, although they had to wait until the last 10 minutes of the game to make sure of the three points.

When speaking in the post-match press conference in which FAWSL Full-Time were present, Taylor said that he expected Durham to be a tough nut to crack given their good reputation in the game.

“People looking at this game tonight will have expected us to win by a big margin,” Taylor said. “This Durham team have been really successful in the Championship and they held Manchester United in the last game, they drew with them in the Conti Cup. It was always going to be quite difficult.

“When you keep a team at 1-0 for a long period, they are still in it but it is good for us, we have bounced back from the weekend and go into Sunday’s game….looking forward to it now and looking to build on this momentum.

With Manchester City now boasting six points from their two FA Women’s Continental League Cup games, a winning result against Manchester United in their next game should be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals. Despite The Cityzens being well-placed to quality, Taylor said that his side want to win both of their remaining games.

He said “We are in a group of five which is slightly different to what we had last season and mathematically looking at it, depending on other results, there’s potential (to qualify with a positive result against Manchester United).

“We’ve got two remaining games in this league format and we always play to win, we try to go out and put on a performance and we know that a performance usually takes care of the result.

“It is a good game for us to have (against Manchester United) but we won’t discount the Leicester City game as well because that’ll be important for us.”

Manchester City return to Barclays FA Women’s Super League action next with The Cityzens travelling to The King Power Stadium to face Leicester City on Sunday.
