Taylor vows to keep on fighting following Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea

Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that he will carry on working hard to turn results around after watching his side slip to a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea at The Academy Stadium this afternoon.

The Cityzens have lost all three of their Barclays FA Women’s Super League games at home so far this season while Manchester City end the weekend in ninth position in the table.

Some fans have questioned whether a managerial change may be needed at The Academy Stadium despite Manchester City having been without several key players in the early stages of this season through injury. In response to the building pressure, Taylor says that he will carry on and work hard to turn results around.

“There’s nothing for me to consider,” Taylor said when discussing his position with the media in the post-match press conference. “Until I am told anything different, I carry on and work as hard as I have ever done.

“I’m working so hard in this period with a lot of constraints that we have but I think that the players today showed me that they are capable of playing the way that we want to play and building the way that we want to play. We just need that little bit of good fortune, to be a bit more ruthless in attack when it matters and we need to obviously cut out errors at the back, it’s as simple as that.”

Manchester City competed with Chelsea in the opening 45 minutes but they struggled to create many clear goalscoring opportunities and were punished for a couple of errors at the other end. Despite the defeat, Taylor went on to say that he saw positives to take from his side’s performance.

He said “It was a tough scoreline for us to take, especially given how we played in the first half. We were punished for our errors and we had a tough start to the game like we did last week but I thought that the players showed real quality in the way that they fought back from that. Obviously, it was disappointing going in at half-time having conceded that extra goal.

“I thought that our first half performance was very good, the second half was more even. Again, we were punished because we didn’t defend well enough from the set play.

“It feels a bit of a tough scoreline to take if I am honest but I thought that there were real positives for us to build on. On another day, I think we stay in the game without the errors and give ourselves a chance to win it.”

Manchester City return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Manchester United for an FA Women’s Continental League Cup group game.
