Everton manager Jean-Luc Vasseur says that his side will not be taking this afternoon’s opponents Leicester City lightly.
The Blue Girls defeated The Foxes in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup in Vasseur’s first game in charge while Leicester City are yet to collect a point in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
When speaking in his pre-match press conference, Vasseur said that opponents should never be taken lightly even if they are not in the greatest form.
“It’s never easy, I never underestimate the opponent and I have never had this state of mind,” Vasseur said. “If you think like that, it can be a dangerous situation.
“I can guarantee that we won’t prepare for games in this manner. We go into this game with respect for the opponent and we will look to exploit the weaknesses in them but we will not be taking them lightly.”
Vasseur gained plenty of experience of going into games as favourites with former club Lyon. Comparing the teams towards the bottom of the French Division 1 FĂ©minine with those at the bottom of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, Vasseur said that the gap in quality in England is much smaller.
He said “There is a big difference between the teams in France, here, the gap is very narrow. For example, Brighton are third in the table and there is a points difference but I think when we played against them two weeks’ ago, there was no gap between the two teams.
“We haven’t played City, Chelsea or Arsenal but at this moment, it is very difficult to play Leicester, Man U, Brighton. The score in sometimes different but there is no gap in quality.
“We need to change the mentality and we need to improve but I think we can play better and move up the table.”
Everton’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Leicester City kicks-off at 2pm at The Pirelli Stadium.
