Simone Magill says that it is a great feeling to be out on the field scoring goals for Northern Ireland again following a difficult start to the season on a personal level.
The Everton forward’s campaign has been disrupted by an injury and a family bereavement but Magill has returned with a real bang in recent weeks, scoring goals for club and country.
Magill hit four goals in Northern Ireland’s 11-0 record win over North Macedonia in Skopje yesterday. When speaking with the media after the match, she expressed her delight at being back on the field and scoring goals for her country.
“It feels fantastic,” she said. “I have obviously been away for a while so to get back out there with the girls and score goals is great.
“If it’s one (goal) or if it’s four, it doesn’t matter, what’s most important is that we came here, we were clinical, we were ruthless, that’s what we wanted to be today. To contribute to that is a fantastic feeling.”
Northern Ireland were relentless as they went on to chalk up their biggest-ever competitive victory. Magill said that the players enjoyed the occasion and were able to express themselves throughout.
She added “These are the games that you love, you enjoy….just getting on the ball, linking-up is great.
“We really got to express ourselves today, we didn’t take our foot off the gas at all. That’s what we wanted to make sure that we did today because we’ve spent years of that being us and us being on the end of that (kind of scoreline) so we know how it feels.
“Goal difference matters in this campaign so we wanted to make sure that we were clinical today.”
Northern Ireland meet North Macedonia again in FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 qualifying at Seaview in Belfast on Monday evening. The game is a complete sell-out and kicks-off at 7pm.
