This evening’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup fixture between Leicester City and Manchester City has been called-off due to positive COVID-19 cases in the visitors’ ranks.
Manchester City announced the news via an update on their official website earlier today. Janine Beckie and Keira Walsh had tested positive prior to Sunday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League game against Birmingham City and it has now been revealed that further cases have been recorded in The Cityzens’ camp.
Given the fact that Manchester City currently top their FA Women’s Continental League Cup group, it seems likely that the game will be scheduled for early in the new year rather than be declared void. A couple of group games fell foul of COVID-19 last season but given the fact that those games were ‘dead rubber’ fixtures they were never rescheduled.
Manchester City have one more game pencilled in before Christmas, a home fixture against Reading in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League, however, that game could also now be in doubt, although no decision has yet been made.
This evening’s postponement is the first in the women’s elite game since COVID-19’s Omicron variant hit the UK. It is understood that some other clubs are currently battling positive cases ahead of tonight’s and the weekend’s games.
