Manchester City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Reading on Sunday has been postponed due to the home club’s ongoing battle with positive COVID-19 cases.
The Cityzens were without Janine Beckie and Keira Walsh as they won 3-2 at Birmingham City last weekend while Lucy Bronze was in self-isolation. Further positive cases were recorded in midweek resulting in the postponement of the club’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup group game at Leicester City.
This weekend’s fixture against Reading always seemed like it would be at threat of cancellation and the club have today confirmed the postponement following dialogue with The Football Association.
The postponement is the first of the weekend in the women’s elite game. It is understood that some other clubs are battling with COVID issues in their respective camps, however, the current picture does seem to be better than in the men’s game where a number of Premier League and English Football League matches have been called-off.
Manchester City now have more than three weeks to rest and recover before their next scheduled fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League on 9 January. The club will rearrange the postponed Leicester City and Reading fixtures in due course.
