Birmingham City’s interim head coach Darren Carter says that Eleanor Ryan-Doyle has put forward solid claims to start against Leicester City this weekend.
The 23-year-old forward moved to Birmingham City in the summer after playing in part-time football in the Republic of Ireland with Peamount United.
Ryan-Doyle netted twice in Birmingham City’s FA Women’s Continental League Cup draw at London City Lionesses in midweek and Blues boss Carter says that the player is in his thoughts to start the game at Leicester City on Sunday.
“I thought Ellie was excellent the other night,” Carter told FAWSL Full-Time. “You can see that she is a natural finisher, Ellie gets into natural goalscoring positions so I wasn’t surprised to see her get a couple of goals the other night and she could’ve had a couple more.
“I think that it is great that she has got her first two senior goals, she will only get more confidence from that and she works extremely hard. She is one of many in the squad now who didn’t start against Manchester City on Sunday but got minutes the other night and has put herself in the frame.”
Given the fact that Ryan-Doyle has come from the part-time game back in her homeland, Birmingham City are yet to see the best of the player but Carter expects her to go from strength-to-strength with more full-time training sessions and experience.
He added “When you come from part-time to full-time, there is always that period of adjusting, especially fitness-wise. The training every day and the full-time training does take it’s toll on your body and you have to adjust. The more sessions as the weeks go by and the more minutes that she can get, the stronger she will get, her confidence levels will go up and playing against stronger, fitter players will push her to step up to their level.
“I’ve got no doubt that Ellie has got that in her, she has got a great temperament and attitude. She signifies what the group is about, they want to get better, they want to get stronger and she will certainly be pushing for a start.”
Birmingham City’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixture against Leicester City at The King Power Stadium kicks-off at 2pm on Sunday.
