Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor says that his side will have a favourable challenge in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup quarter-finals if The Cityzens manage to qualify with victory over Leicester City tomorrow night.
Taylor’s side will reach the quarter-finals as group winners if they defeat The Foxes in their rearranged final group match at The Pirelli Stadium. They would then have the benefit of a home tie against second tier club Bristol City in the knockouts.
With Arsenal and Manchester United set to face each other in the quarter-finals and Chelsea facing a tough game at West Ham United, the quarter-final draw has delivered some big games. With Manchester City having the prospect of a match against FA Women’s Championship opposition, head coach Taylor knows that his side would have a great chance of reaching the semi-finals if they can qualify from their group.
“It is set up really nicely for us but we are under no illusions that it will be a tough task to go to Burton tomorrow night and play against a team who have got nothing to lose,” Taylor said in his pre-match press conference.
“We have to make sure that it is all about us, we really respect the opposition and do everything that we can to reach that stage.”
Despite Leicester City facing a near-impossible task to qualify themselves, Taylor is still expecting the East Midlands club to work hard and be difficult to beat.
He said “They’re under new management and they’ve tried to make it more difficult for the opposition, they already made it quite difficult anyway.
“We’ve scored goals already against them this season and that will be important in this game as well. We will expect them to be tight and resolute and those games can be quite difficult.
“The earlier you score the better but we have proved in some of our recent games where we have been nil-nil at half-time that we have the attitude and mentality to unlock the opponent in the second half.”
The FA Women’s Continental League Cup group match between Leicester City and Manchester City kicks-off at 7pm on Wednesday evening with admission available on the night.
