Arsenal have returned to winning ways in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League after coming from behind to defeat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at the LV Bet Stadium this evening.
Emma Koivisto headed the visitors ahead in the first half but Arsenal were more like themselves in the second period and goals from Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead turned the game on it’s head.
Arsenal went close early on but Maya Le Tissier was well-placed to hack Miedema’s effort off the line.
Brighton & Hove Albion then took a shock lead when Koivisto connected with a free-kick and looped the ball over Arsenal keeper Manuela Zinsberger and into the far corner of the net. That goal was The Seagulls’ first in almost 11 hours of football.
Arsenal were poor for the remainder of the half and they went into the break with only a tame Jordan Nobbs free-kick to show for their efforts, that shot having been easily gathered by Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Megan Walsh.
Jonas Eidevall had clearly delivered a tough half-time team-talk with Arsenal coming out much brighter for the second half. Miedema tested Walsh on a couple of occasions in the opening minutes of the half before finally grabbing an equaliser from point blank range.
The Gunners soon established the lead with Mead striking a wonderful free-kick across goal and into the far corner of the net.
Miedema looked the most likely to add to Arsenal’s goal tally but she was denied by a good save from Walsh before the action in and around the 18-yard box dried up.
Arsenal regain their four-point advantage over second-placed Chelsea in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League following tonight’s result while Brighton & Hove Albion remain eighth.
