Eidevall hails role of ‘brilliant’ Miedema in Arsenal’s victory over Reading

Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall hailed the role played by Vivianne Miedema as ‘brilliant’ after she helped her side to a 4-0 victory over Reading at the LV Bet Stadium last night.

The Dutch international forward was fielded in a deeper role than usual but she still managed to net the opener and she set up teammate Stina Blackstenius for the fourth goal.

Commenting on the player’s performance after the match, Eidevall said that he thought that Miedema had been superb.

“I think she was brilliant tonight,” Eidevall said when speaking in the post-match press conference. “It helps a lot to have a player who has that technique and that if you smash the ball to her, she can still keep her composure. That is so hard to defend against in those spaces.

“I think her playing deeper does not mean that she isn’t going to be in the end product of our attacks and that is so important. It is a starting position, it is a position that we can link up and glue the team together. If you see how many times that she was involved in making that final pass or the shot or the second assist, she basically has a hand in most of our attacks and that becomes dangerous during the game. Very, very well done to her.”

Arsenal’s victory over Reading moved them five points clear at the top of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table but Eidevall admitted that he has no interest in rankings at this stage.

He said “I honestly don’t know how the table looks and it doesn’t matter because like I said after the Chelsea game, I know the conditions into it. We are going to do our best in every game that we play and try to put in strong performances so we can win those games.

“We need to put our focus into the development of our team so that’s all I am thinking about, it’s our focus.”

Arsenal are back in action again on Sunday when they welcome bottom club Birmingham City to the LV Bet Stadium.
