Liverpool promoted back to FAWSL after victory at Bristol City

Liverpool will be playing Barclays FA Women’s Super League football again next season after a 4-2 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate this afternoon confirmed their status at FA Women’s Championship title winners.

Niamh Fahey, Jas Matthews, Katie Stengel and Missy Bo Kearns were all on target for The Reds as they put an end to their two-year stay in the second tier.

Liverpool came out with confidence and they made their mark early on at Ashton Gate with experienced defender Fahey putting her side ahead from close range in the 13th minute.

To their credit, Bristol City responded quickly and they were soon level through youngster Aggie Beaver-Jones when her cross deceived visiting keeper Rachael Laws.

Liverpool did not let the equaliser deter them from their promotion mission and they regained the lead before the break with Matthews firing home from inside the area.

Forward Stengel coolly made it 3-1 to The Reds midway through the second half before Bristol City again reduced the arrears with top scorer Abi Harrison getting her name on the scoresheet.

Midfielder Bo Kearns then made it 4-2 as Liverpool secured the three points and with it a place in next season’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
